Dyson Foundation Conducts STEM Workshop

On March 15, Room 216 and Room 218, two 3rd grade classrooms, participated in a rapid-prototyping STEM workshop. Students worked in teams to brainstorm issues and develop a prototype of a project to solve a particular program. They then created a 3-D model and shared their work with the class.

5th Grade Trip to Springfield

On Wednesday, June 10th, our Skinner West 5th Graders boarded the buses and headed to our state capital.  The 5th Graders visited many of the highlights in Springfield including the Abraham Lincoln Museum, Lincoln's historic home, Lincoln's tomb, and the Illinois Capitol Building.  It was very enjoyable and interesting trip.

Thank you to the teachers, staff and parents who helped make this trip possible.

K-2 Field Trip to the Zoo

On Tuesday, June 9th, Skinner West Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Graders took a field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo.  The weather was perfect and the students enjoyed spending the day outside and seeing all the animals on exhibit at Lincoln Park Zoo.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers for chaperoning this trip!

Cassroom Connection - Ms. Growe's Class

March has been a busy month in room 118. Ms. Growe's class has been celebrating Reading Month by celebrating and studying Dr. Seuss, the famous children's author. Each day, children are encouraged to bring a Dr. Seuss book from home. The kindergarten day ends by sharing those books with friends in small groups. The children even dressed silly one week in honor of Dr. Seuss' book, Wacky Wednesday.

On St. Patrick's Day a little green leprechaun added to our fun by sneaking into our class for a special yet mischievous visit.

Kindergarteners are looking forward to spring and their upcoming science research projects where they will learn about plants, flowers and their life cycles.

Cassroom Connection- 2nd Grade

If you stop by second grade, you'll find students abuzz with their newfound love of Poetry. Thanks to Gallery 111, all four second grade classrooms have been enjoying Hands on Stanzas, a 20 week-longstudy of poetry with Mr. Larry Dean from The Poetry Center of Chicago. Weekly sessions include reading and analyzing a featured poem, as well as writing original works. Three of our young poets' work were featured during the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's performances of the Carnival of the Animals on March 20th and March 21st. Congratulations to Rebecca B., Tiara H. and Alexandra M. on this outstanding accomplishment.

Mrs. Christiansen’s 3rd Grade Creates African American Hero Wax Museum

African American History Month came to life on Wednesday, February 25th at Skinner West Elementary School as the second floor hallway was turned into a one-of-a-kind African American Hero Wax Museum with artists, literary geniuses, scientists, athletes, politicians, civil rights leaders and activists, and entertainers. Parents, students, teachers, and friends came out to see our Superstars in action.

The third grade students have spent the last several weeks researching and becoming experts on an African American Hero of their choice. After their investigations were complete, they had to take the information they learned and turn it into a first person speech to present during the Wax Museum. Our heroes were still as statues and only came to life once their buttons were pushed by a museum goer.
