Skinner Official Lockdown Drill lockdown

Our Superstars and teachers received compliments from Chicago Police officers who conducted our annually mandated lockdown drill on Wednesday, May 23 at both the main building and the Branch. Our teachers and Superstars have practiced lockdown procedures throughout the year and knew exactly what to do when the police officers conducted the drill.

The drill begins with an officer or school staff person announcing, " Lockdown, lockdown. This is a lockdown." The procedures include locking classroom doors, turning off the lights, drawing shades, having students hide away from view of the doors and remaining silent . During the drill no one should move or open a classroom door even if there is a knock on the door. At the end of the drill, the officers announced "all clear" and the students went back to their normal routine for the day.

We are proud that our official lockdown drill ran smoothly and that our Superstars and teachers know these important safety procedures.

Skinner West Student Council - Service Learning Project servicelearning

The Student Council settled on their service learning project!

The Skinner West Student Council is proud to announce that we will be holding a book drive to benefit children in need across the Chicagoland area. We will be partnering with Bernie's Book Bank to give new and gently used books to those who need them most, KIDS! If every student donates just one book, that will allow Skinner to donate over 1,000 books!

Details for the drive are as follows

Donations will be accepted starting on Tuesday May 29th through June Friday June 8th. If you'd like to donate, there will be a sign and storage bin in the middle of the lobby. All you have to do is drop a new or gently used book in the bin and you've contributed! Let's show Chicago how charitable our Superstars can be!

*As a general rule when donating to charity, only donate the items that are in good to excellent condition. If there's too much wear and tear then the item may be tossed aside*

"An Invitation to Talk": Townhall Meetings with Dr. Janice Jackson townhall

Dear CPS Parents and Families,

As CPS parents, your voices count for so much, and you've helped us make schools throughout the city stronger. Today, I'm pleased to invite you to participate in a series of town hall meetings we'll be holding this month to listen to your thoughts and priorities, as well as open new lines of communication about how Chicago Public Schools can best support you and your family.

The past several years have brought tremendous progress for our students. I'm proud to say that CPS is earning national recognition - just recently, Stanford University said that our elementary students are learning six years' worth of math and reading in just five years of instruction. We've also stabilized our budget after years of challenges.

But I know we have a lot of work left to do, and parents will be vital to sustaining our progress.  As a CPS parent myself, I want to hear directly from you about how we can work together to ensure that our schools are strong and vibrant learning communities.

At each meeting, we will provide a brief overview of the state of our schools and reserve the majority of the time for you to speak with me and my leadership team. Representatives from various CPS departments will also be on hand to speak one-on-one with parents about how we can best support you and address any individual issues that you may have.

Town halls will occur from 6-8 p.m. on the following dates:
  • Tuesday, May 15 at Whitney Young Magnet High School
  • Thursday, May 17 at Brooks College Preparatory Academy
  • Monday, May 21 at Amundsen High School
  • Thursday, May 24 at Michele Clark High School
  • Tuesday, May 29 at Back of the Yards College Prep

I see a bright future for our students, one in which every student in every neighborhood reaches their full potential. By working together, we will ensure that happens. I hope to see you at one of the town halls.
