3rd Grade Wax Museum
wax

Last Friday, March 9th, third grade students presented their annual Wax Museum.  Each student dressed up as a favorite African American hero and participated in the 'wax museum,' where they gave a speech stating important facts about their hero. Students froze in position awaiting their visitors. Parents, teachers, and students who visited the Wax Museum pressed a button on a frozen figure's shoulder and then listened as scientists, athletes, entertainers, politicians, and activists told their own life stories. Thank you to the Skinner community for supporting these students and congratulations to our 3rd grade superstars!

Classroom Connections from Skinner's Library
library

Kindergarten has been learning about book awards during library class, including the Caldecott and Coretta Scott King awards. The students have explored different titles and illustration styles through a variety of literary formats, including read-alouds, e-books, and story videos.

Ask a kindergarten student their thoughts on illustrations from Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (Caldecott, 1964), Peggy Rathman's Officer Buckle and Gloria (Caldecott,1996), Dan Santat's Adventure's of Beekle (Caldecott, 2015) or Ashley Bryan's Beautiful Blackbird (Corretta Scott King Illustrator Award, 2004),

Below are pictures of Ms. Growe's Kindergarten class trying out Ashley Bryan's cut paper illustration style.

On February 27, the Skinner West Glee Club participated in the 18th Annual Providence St Mel Vocal Workshop
Celebrating African-American Music and Musicians. The singers rehearsed together with students from Lenart Regional Gifted Center and Providence St Mel school, preparing songs and getting coaching on vocal technique. They were led in a Vocal Solo Clinic by tenor Cornelius Johnson, who demonstrated opera and musical theater styles, fielded questions about his career as a singer, and led the group in an upbeat spiritual from the piano. Participants then had a Choral Clinic with composer/conductor Rollo Dillworth, followed by a performance of his compositions by the massed workshop chorus.
