Skinner's Spanish Heritage Celebration!

On November 10th, Skinner West had a wonderful Spanish Heritage Celebration. Students talked about Hispanic heritage celebrities and famous people.  Student presenters introduced the celebration of the 21 Spanish Speaking countries. Students talked about how many people in the world speak Spanish, what parts of the world speak Spanish, and why it is so important to learn Spanish.  Students presented the Spanish Speaking flags and sang our Skinner Spirit Song in Spanish. SeƱor Alvizuri and the upper grade students energetically presented lessons about Spanish geography, artists, writers and Spanish culture with the help of his "Jeopardy" game.  The amazing mariachi band "Guadalajara Real" came to play beautiful folkloric songs from Mexico.  Everybody enjoyed the Spanish Heritage celebration at Skinner West!
We thank our Forum/PTO for sponsoring the Mariachi Band. Muchas gracias!

Classroom Connections:
Third Grade Field Trip

On Monday, November 13th, the third grade classes attended a showing of "The Scorpion's Sting" presented by the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This year third graders will work with a teaching artist form the Lyric to compose, produce, and perform their very own operas! Seeing "The Scorpion's Sting" was an excellent introduction to this art form for our Superstars. Students were entertained and in awe during the opera. They were even able to ask the performers questions at the end. It was a great way to start our week and everyone is really motivated to begin working on their operas with the Lyric!

Art Room Highlights

Kindergarten just finished their unit on mixing colors. They created pumpkins as a result of one of the lessons, focusing on secondary colors and highlights.

1st Grade just finished studying American artist Jasper Johns, repetition, contrast and resist painting with their name art.

2nd & 3rd Grade studied Yayoi Kusama's installation and sculptural art and created mixed media pieces inspired by her dot filled pumpkin sculptures.

4th grade created collage masks and Papel Picados while learning about Dia de los Muertos. Check out their colorful work throughout the school.

5th grade is studying positive and negative space while creating Notans: a Japanese design concept involving the play of light and dark elements in a composition.

6th grade studied animal adaptations and Chinese artist Liu Bolin. Inspired by what they studied, students created original paintings and then camouflaged their hands into their painting for a final photograph.

7th grade explored the Museum of Contemporary Art and created sculptures inspired by an exhibit they saw. In Art class, students are creating soft sculpture emojis while learning basic sewing skills. They should be able to fix their own buttons and holes now!

8th grade is currently printing their linoleum blocks in which they hand carved original designs. Keep your eye out for these stunning prints in the hallway soon!
