Budget Cuts Affect Mandarin Program
Every year CPS reviews each school's enrollment figures on the 10th  and the 20th day of the school year. If a school's enrollment figures are over the projected enrollment, the school will receive an increase in funds. If a school's enrollment is under the projected count,  the school will get a decrease in funds.

During the July budget planning cycle, our projected enrollment and funding was based on1057 students. On the 10th day, our enrollment was down  14 students totaling 1043 ( pre schoolers are not included in this count.) Consequently , we had to give back the following funds to CPS: $ 60,356 in School Based Budgeting Funds; $17,613 in Diverse Learner Funds and $ 5,649 in SGSA funds totaling $ 83,618 in 10th day budget cuts.

In order to give back these funds to CPS, we had to close our vacant Mandarin teacher position formerly held by Ms Kong.  This was a devastating blow for us because our hopes and funds for getting a second Mandarin teacher have vanished.

These cuts mean that our Classical 1st-3rd graders and neighborhood 1st-4th will not receive Mandarin at this time. However, because of our strong commitment to providing foreign language to all of our Superstars, we are in the process of pursuing other options for both funding and foreign language instruction. We will discuss our progress on the various possibilities at our November 15th LSC meeting.
