Main Office Hours are: 8:15 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. @ main number 773-534-7790 (Note the peak times are from 8am to 9:30am and 3:15 to 4pm. We appreciate your patience).
Remember the absence policy does NOT require a phone call to the office. Rather, please send a written note to your teacher upon RETURN from your student's absence.
STAR PROGRAM Participants
If your child is in the STAR Program, and you need to reach the office (ONLY FOR EMERGENCY PURPOSES), you should call the main number at 773-534-7790
and when prompted, enter the 5-digit extension of 61159
. This is the security desk. Please note, if you do not receive an answer, try calling back because the security personnel may have stepped away. Please do not leave messages. Try calling back until someone answers.
SKINNER PARK PROGRAM Participants
If your child is in the Skinner Park Program, and you need to reach someone for EMERGENCY PURPOSES ONLY, please call the park district at 312-746-5560
FOR EMERGENCY PURPOSES ONLY, if you need to reach someone after 6:30 P.M., you should call Chicago Public Schools at 773-553-1000.
Please fill and return the Family Income Information Form
All parents should have received the CPS Family Income Information Form
2016 - 2017 during the open house sessions. This form replaces the free and reduced lunch applications.
This form is critical for Skinner West to receive SGSA funds! Our goal is a 95% return rate!
2016-2017 Minimum Health Reqirements for CPS
"Evidence shows that healthy students have better attendance patterns and perform better academically." The following health requirements apply to all children enrolled in a Chicago Public School.

Children must provide proof of required immunizations and health exams before October 15, 2016 or they will face exclusion from school.

While a room parent's primary responsibilities are determined in consultation with each teacher, below are general guidelines:
If you'd like to become a room parent, please reach out to Sabrina Wing at email@example.com
- Complete an email & phone contact list for your classroom
- Serve as a resource for classroom parents/act as a liaison between the classroom teacher & parents;
- Reach out to new classroom families & include them on email communications;
- Solicit volunteers & donations for classroom activities as requested by the teacher;
- Answer school-related questions for classroom parents; and
- Communicate pertinent school/classroom news & volunteer opportunities to parents.

Together they bring professional and personal experience from nonprofit, legal, public relations, technology and previous PTA organizations. They will each play a key role in working to build community and increase fundraising opportunities to support Skinner West programs.

New PTO Sub-committees

Governance - this committee will be working to empower all parents & teachers with a voice by establishing up-to-date voting procedures for PTO board elections and issues before PTO such as funding requests. Activities include reviewing current bylaws and investigating ways to modernize and increase transparency, efficiency and engagement.
Event Planning - from Halloween parties to Casino nights, the event planning committee is looking for help to plan fun events for families, teachers and staff!

3rd - 5th Grade Parents danced to Thriller as we gear up for October!
Candle Fundraising Packets Due - October 10thPTO has kicked off the Yankee Candle Fundraiser, and we want every student to sell at least one candle. We are hoping to raise at least $10,000 to use for our classrooms. The candles make perfect holiday gifts and are delivered before Thanksgiving. All monies are due by Friday, October 10th. If you need additional order forms, they are in the main office on the counter or near the rack by the elevator. Any questions, please email email@example.com. Thank you for your Superstar support!
Spooky Skinner Party - October 28th
Keep an eyeball out for party details and online volunteer signup forms for the all-school party! Open to all families, friends, teachers and staff.
Door Decorating Contest - October 6th - 28th
This year's theme is Haunted School! Room parents and teachers will be sending details home and also work with parents/teachers/students to decorate their classroom door. Students that participate will receive purple slips.
First School Improvement Meeting on October 4th @ 5:30pm
The School Improvement Committee, which is a standing committee of the Local School Council, facilitates the social and academic concerns of students, parents and faculty at Skinner West. The Committee also assists in the development and implementation of the Continuous Improvement Work Plan.
YOUR IDEAS MATTER!
Come to the next SIC meeting to contribute your ideas and share your ideas on working together towards your student's social and academic excellence. We will be discussing the priorities for the upcoming school year in our first meeting!

Volunteers are needed for the 10/13 Walkathon
Are you interested in volunteering at the Walkathon? Many parents are needed to make this event a success. We are in need of volunteers to help with monitoring the route, distributing water, handing out fruit, First Aid and picking up the pizzas for our volunteers.
If you can help with any of these duties, please sign up on our Google docs sheet or attend a brief informational meeting on October 5th at 6:00pm.

School Absence Policy
If your child is absent, please provide your teacher a note with a parent's or doctor's signature in order to receive an excused absence. This is mandatory to receive an excused absence. Phone calls to the office are optional.

Avoid a Ticket and Keep Our Students Safe!
There was an unfortunate incident earlier this week in which two Whitney Young students were struck by a car while crossing the streets of Jackson and Laflin. Though the injuries were minor (scratches and bruises), the outcome could have been much worse.
Please see here for parking, pick up and drop off rules. When in doubt, please slow down and watch for kids!

Crazy Chem classes will be on Mondays.
A new "BRIXOLOGY" class for the older (4th - 6th grade) students will be on Thursdays. This class is an engineering-based class where they'll learn the engineering design process while creating with Lego bricks.
We're really excited about this new class!
