PTO Forum SupportPTO

Please read this important letter from Mrs. Clark.  Our Forum/PTO really needs your support to help Skinner West augment the funding cuts we've seen this year.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Please see the following two letters.  One is from the Board of Education and one is from CPS.  Thank you.
As CPS families, you see the hard work of principals and educators every day, and your children get to experience the great things happening in classrooms. Today, we wanted to share with you that now a national audience is learning about the excellent work happening in Chicago schools, where our students are reaching even greater heights. You can read more about it in
the New York Timeshere

While our district faces challenges,
the New York Times reminds us all that the dynamic leadership of CPS principals is at the heart of the work we do as a district. We're proud of the work of our school leaders and classroom educators, and grateful for all that they do.

We hope you'll take a moment to celebrate this well-deserved national recognition of our schools, and thank principals and teachers for the great work that they're doing.

On Tuesday February 28, the Saakumu Dance Troupe from Ghana, West Africa visited Skinner West. They presented interactive dance performances to grades K-4, and taught drumming, dance and song workshops to grades 5 - 8. The students learned about Ghanaian instruments such as the Gyil (a xylophone made from béné wood, calabash gourds and goat skin) and the djembe-- a goblet shaped drum. All students at the workshops got a chance to dance and drum, and even some teachers joined in. Music of Ghana Day was a great way to end our celebration of African American History month. Thank you, PTO Forum for sponsoring this fun event!

 Congratulations Superstars!!
Two of our 8th grade students, Jessica L. & Kayla W., were selected to attend a week-l ng entrepreneurship with Google.  Only thirty young women from Chicago were selected. These young ladies are going to be exposed to Chicago's entrepreneurial ecosystem. We know they will be picking up several new skills that they will share with us when they return from spring "training".  The Class of 2017 congratulates them on this wonderful opportunity!!!
Whitney Young Basketball Campballcamp
This is Quinn Peterson, the head boys basketball coach at Walter Payton College Prep. I am excited to announce that we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Payton Grizzlies Summer Youth Basketball Camp at Walter Payton College Prep this year from Monday, July 31st to Friday, August 4th 9a-12p. Registration is officially open! There are a limited number of spots available and we do expect that this camp will be filled to capacity this year based on turnouts for our previous fall and summer camps.

This camp will take place in our brand new gym which opened this year, and be led by our varsity coaching staff with assistance from some of our varsity athletes. We will be focusing of fundamentals and skill development, in addition to scrimmages and competitions throughout the week.

As you may know, we are the top-ranked school academically in Illinois, and this camp is a great opportunity for young student-athletes to develop their skills, meet our coaches and have some fun for the week.

Attached here is a registration form included all additional camp details. Please pass this information along to families who may be interested, and direct them to me if they have any additional questions.

Thanks and have a great day.

Best regards,
Quinn Peterson

Classroom Connections - Miss Dalaldalal
Last Friday, February 24, the third grade presented their annual Wax Museum in celebration of Black History Month. Each student chose an influential African American to research, then wrote and memorized a brief oral presentation. Students took on the persona of their hero and delivered their speeches as that person, complete with a costume and props. Visitors to the Wax Museum were greeted by frozen figures who came to life at the press of a "button." Civil rights activists, politicians, entertainers, scientists, and athletes told visitor after visitor about their inspiring lives. Parents, teachers, and students were wowed by the students' research, creativity, and public speaking skills. We are so grateful to our Skinner community for your support of our students!
