Skinner West Hit With More Budget Cuts budgetcuts

Skinner West, like most other CPS schools, was asked by CPS to shave a significant amount of funds from its budget by Feb 13th.

Although the targeted amount varied from school to school, Skinner had to cut $49,247.50.

With LSC approval, Mrs. Clark cut funds from textbooks, supplies, salary adjustment, security and furniture budget lines. We also had to split fund a teacher position using our current year allocation from SGSA funds.

These midyear cuts are the result of our state legislators not allocating an expected $215 million to CPS.

If you want to know more about this continued budget crisis and what you can do about it, please access the CPS website at www.cps.edu

ALL Students Welcome At Every CPS School studentswelcome

Dear CPS Families,

We know that recent decisions by the government have led to fear and anxiety among some CPS families, especially those from outside the United States. This situation has led to a national day of Action on Thursday, February 16, with demonstrations planned to support the rights of immigrants and refugees.

Every CPS school will welcome all children, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or country of origin and create a safe and affirming environment where those students can learn. We believe that every child has the absolute right to a quality education, which is why we want to see all students in school every day, including this Thursday.

We commend students and families for supporting the issues they believe in, but hope that all parents will choose to send their children to school tomorrow so that they can continue receiving the education that will prepare them to become our country's next generation of leaders. If students are absent from school, their absences will be considered unexcused against their attendance records, unless their absences are related to illness, a doctor's visit, etc.

Below are messages that you can share with your school communities as robocalls or emails. We look forward to seeing all children in school on Thursday, February 16, and we appreciate your support in this matter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Janice K. Jackson
Chief Education Officer
Chicago Public Schools

Classroom Connection: Ms. Every Every

Ms.Every's students are celebrating Black History Month by creating google slides projects on African American leaders and role models in history.

Students were very excited about getting to choose someone they are interested in to focus their project on. They were also ecstatic at being able to work with google slides, where they can hone their technology skills and share features with each other.

They are now in the middle of presenting their projects to their fellow classmates. Students are getting great practice in developing public speaking skills and being attentive listeners and note-takers.

Classroom Connection: Mr. Linke Linke

Earlier this month, Mr. Linke's 5th Grade class traveled to Walter Payton High School to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a group of high school students from the Renmin University, located in Beijing.

Our class experienced several performances put on by the visiting students involving music and dances. The RDFZ symphony performed several symphonic pieces native to China. The students finished their presentation with Martial Arts dances, Aerobics, as well as other traditional Chinese dances.

Before leaving Walter Payton, we were greeted by members of the Chinese consulate who extended well wishes and a Happy Year of the Rooster to everyone that was in attendance.
Classroom Connection: Mr. Lee Lee

Throughout the year we attempt to link the mathematical skills we learn to real world applications. Recently, this took the form of an activity involving Linear Equations to analyze and select a Cell Phone Plan.

The purpose of the activity was to solve a real-life mathematical problem using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. Students did this by:
  • using variables to represent quantities in a real-world mathematical problem;
  • constructing simple equations and inequalities; and
  • using quantitative and qualitative reasoning to analyze the different possible choices in the scenario.
After working independently to solve the problem, students discussed their answers and engaged in a group evaluation of the answers they had arrived at. They debated the relative pros and cons of the different plans and supported their conclusions with mathematical evidence and logical reasoning.

At the end of the lesson, we had a class discussion on the ways the mathematical techniques we employed could be expanded to other areas of life, such as mortgage payments, cars, student loan repayments, and more.

We also discussed possible variants of the problem, such as incorporating interest or predetermined factors/preferences that might alter the conclusions they arrived at.
