Classroom Connection: Mrs. Chen and Mr. Baron

Chinese New Year 2017
Mrs. Chen's Mandarin classes are going to to Walter Payton High School to celebrate Chinese New Year for a field trip this Friday, 1/27.

Also, on 1/31, the BAC is presenting a Lion Dance performance for Skinner students in the gymnasium. Members from the Chicago Chinese Cultural Center will perform the traditional dance for all Skinner Superstars!

Classroom Connection: Ms. O'Connor
Ms. O'Connor's students were able to celebrate their hard reading work this quarter by playing their book report games this week. That's right.  My students took a book report and made a game board out of it. It was an activity that the students got creative with parent help.

Students not only got excited about choosing the reading material, but they demonstrated understanding of a text and thought abstractly and quantitatively to create their games.

The best part is when the students bring their projects to school and their classmates get to play it with the creator. Happy Reading!

Hands on Stanza Residency for 4th Grade

Through the generosity of a Gallery 111 grant, the 4th graders recently began a residency program with the Poetry Center of Chicago

During the weekly lessons with Mr. Larry Dean, children get to experience a wide range of poetry.  The children are afforded an opportunity to discuss both the mechanics and structure of the words, and the possible underlying meanings of the poem. From getting an introduction into the poet's background, to sharing their own impressions of the work, students benefit by gaining a deeper understanding of this important genre of literature.

The poetry workshop's lessons support the Language Arts curriculum, while providing an outlet for creative expression, which includes time for the children to create and share their own poems.

Students are very excited to have their poems published on the Poetry Center's website, which you are invited to visit to read some amazing student-created poems.

"Teach your children poetry; it opens the mind, lends grace to wisdom and makes the heroic virtues hereditary." -Walter Scott

Smiles Change Lives: Great Opportunity for Skinner School!

Ruthie Z. is our 8th grader and she would like to pass along a wonderful opportunity for kids who may need braces and cannot afford them.

Ruthie Z. and her family have a friend who started a foundation in Kansas City about 20 years ago.  Smiles Change Lives is a nonprofit that provides orthodontic care to kids who can't afford braces. Smiles Change Lives is a national program that has helped over 10,000 kids get braces through its network of 700+ participating orthodontists.
Recently, Smiles Change Lives started providing care in the Chicago area.  Currently there are 100 openings in the Chicago area that are unfilled.
