Ruthie Z. is our 8th grader and she would like to pass along a wonderful opportunity for kids who may need braces and cannot afford them.

Ruthie Z. and her family have a friend who started a foundation in Kansas City about 20 years ago.  Smiles Change Lives is a nonprofit that provides orthodontic care to kids who can't afford braces. Smiles Change Lives is a national program that has helped over 10,000 kids get braces through its network of 700+ participating orthodontists.
Recently, Smiles Change Lives started providing care in the Chicago area.  Currently there are 100 openings in the Chicago area that are unfilled.

Classroom Connections: Art & Ms. Bovit

K, 1st & 2nd have been hard at work creating their masterpieces for the student art show (FRIDAY, JAN 27th) We look forward to seeing everyone there and a fun night to celebrate all of our Skinner artists.

4th grade is studying Surrealism and creating self-portraits inspired by the artist we studied. The twist is their faces are objects that represent their unique personalities.

5th grade explored the Museum of Contemporary Art and just completed their experimental mono-printing unit. The most exciting part was seeing them discover what happens when using everyday objects to create textures and layers of color.

6th grade completed 2D & 3D pieces where they were challenged to "can" an emotion or action, an ode to Pop Art and conveying messages through art.

7th are working on a top secret art installation that will be reveal at the art show!!!

8th just wrapped up their linoleum block pints and they are stunning! They drew, carved by hand & printed their designs in ink. Check out the hallways to see their hard work on display!

Classroom Connections: Music & Ms. Maatouk

What a busy month this past December was!

The Kindergartners, first, fifth, seventh and eighth graders and Glee Club members were practicing and memorizing their holiday concert songs while second and third graders were already out performing around town.

Their first concert was on December 3
rd right in the neighborhood at the Mary Bartleme Park Tree Lighting Ceremony, and their last concert was on December 16
th at the Chicago History Museum-with stops at Marianos, Whole Foods, the Palmer House Hilton and CNA in between.

Let's not forget the Skinner West students involved in Music House, who worked so hard practicing their violins, ukuleles and guitars.

The school concerts on December 20
th and 22
were a great success-students sang and played with strength and expression, and holiday spirits were raised. Kudos to all performers for their hard work and dedication.
more concert pictures can be viewed on the Skinner West Music Page

Happy New Year!

~ Ms. Maatouk
