Skinner Book Fair

Thank you for everyone who volunteered at Skinner's book fair and to all the families who supported Skinner West Library by buying books.  It was a very successful fair and our students had an enjoyable time shopping for their next read!

Classroom Connections - 8th Grade

This Classroom Connection was written by Class of 2017 student , Cleveland H.:

During the 8th grade field trip last Thursday with Encore Theatre Presentations, we watched a series of 5 short stories turned into plays . Not only did these plays further our understanding of the complex stories but they brought them alive by engaging the audience through great acting and an exemplary script. To start, ''The Raven" uses complicated language and is classic...or old so the plot is a challenge to follow.  But after the play,  we were able to visualize this better and it helped us understand what happened.  We are learning more and more about Edgar Allan Poe, his writing style, short stories and POEtry.

Another short story turned into a play for this trip was, "The Monkey's Paw". It is a short story by W. W. Jacobs. The writer of this play got the plot down pat but they added small events into the play that not only enhanced the plot but made it where the audience was learning and enjoying the play. On top of that, the people who worked at the theatre controlled the audience where everyone got a fair chance to appreciate the gift of art that was presented to us on that day.

To sum it all it all up, the plays that were presented for us last Thursday were a delightful experience for the 8th graders and furthered our education while we were enjoying ourselves on a field trip.

Chicago Children's Theatre and Skinner West

Skinner West is partnering with our new neighbor - Chicago Children's Theatre, the city's largest professional theatre company devoted to creating exceptional theater and outstanding education exclusively to children and families.  CCT has recently announced grand opening plans for their new home called The Station, located around the block from Skinner at 100 S. Racine.

As part of this partnership, Skinner West students will be participating in the creation of art with CCT.  Students will be partaking in theatre workshops about art, photography, prop manipulation and storytelling.  The project will come to life in the New Year.  Parents are asked to sign the release form for this project that was sent home with the report cards.

In addition, Chicago Children's Theater has extended priority registration to their upcoming session of classes at That Station for Skinner West families.  Families can use code SKINNER to receive a discount on classes online at

Please contact Samantha Buckman, Education and Community Manager, at 773-227-0180 x 15 for more information.

We look forward to this exciting partnership with our new neighbor!
