Friends of Skinner West would like to thank all students, parents and teachers who made the Walkathon a success.  It was a great day and  so far, we have raised over $30,000.

If you forgot to send in your contribution, you can still send it in to your child's homeroom teacher or view our website at  to make a contribution via Paypal through October 23rd.  The three winning classrooms will be announced the week of October 26th

History Fair is around the corner and it is a wonderful way for students to develop skills that will be important to their success in life, including: finding and analyzing primary resources, the ability to find quality historical sources online, how to develop a thesis, and an evidence-based argument.

The photo, above, was featured in the Chicago Metro History Fair newsletter and it included our very own SUPERSTARS; Alexis C. & Imani R. at Harold Washington Library.
Box Top for School

Be a Box Tops Superstar!

Skinner West participates in the General Mills Box Tops for Education Program. Skinner West earns 10 cents per Box Top. This doesn't sound like much, but it adds up- last year we earned over $1,500!

Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school purchase new library books. This year our school's earnings goal is $2,000.

To help our school, just look for the pink Box Tops on products, clip them, and send them to school!

If you are able to volunteer 1-2 hours a month to help count Box Tops, please email Ms. Ranftl at

Don't Forget School Fees!

  • Fees can be paid via cash or check payable to "Skinner West" and dropped off with your teacher. Please label it with your childs name/ grade

School Absence Policy

If your child is absent, please provide your teacher a note with a parent's or doctor's signature in order to receive an excused absence. This is mandatory to receive an excused absence .
Please see here for school absence policy

Gym Uniform Policy Update!

It is our goal to have all of our Superstars dressed appropriately for every physical education class. All clothing should be light and easy to move in. Any clothing that restricts movement should be avoided.

Also, appropriate footwear is necessary. We strongly recommend purchasing items through Land's End. All items on the website are accepted and each purchase benefits the school. The school's page can be found here.

Please also see here for more information related to ordering through Lands' End.

Please note that students will not be allowed to change in or out of clothes for PE. We kindly as for you to send your Superstar in clothes that abide by the guidelines shown above on their physical education day.

Also, please be aware that accidents do happen and there's an increased likelihood that they will happen during physical education so please take necessary precautions when it comes to bringing or wearing expensive items such as glasses. If your child wears glasses you may consider having them wear an inexpensive/spare pair for P.E.

Thank you for your support.

Reminder to send in your Ancillary Supplies!
Celebrate your child's successes on the Beyond the Desk bulletin board!

Thank you to all the families who have sent in their ancillary supplies! These supplies ensure that every classroom your child visits is stocked for a clean, healthy, engaging learning experience.

If you have not sent your ancillary supplies in, please send them in by the end of September. The Ancillary Supply List can be found here

Take Learning Beyond the Desk...
At Skinner Library, students are encouraged to become life-long learners, thinkers, and doers. School is a vital part of their education, but not the only part- personal interests, sports, hobbies, community organizations, volunteer work, cultural experiences and travel are a few other ways children learn and grow.

We would like to celebrate your child's learning and accomplishments on our "Beyond the Desk" bulletin board outside of the library. If your Superstar has learned something interesting or achieved something they are proud of OUTSIDE of the classroom and want it celebrated, please let us know!

Include your child's name, grade, and a  description of their "Beyond the Desk" experience. Pictures can be included if desired. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Ranftl at
