Motivational Speaker Visits Skinner

On Wednesday, March 2nd, our 5th-8th grade students were treated to motivational speaker, Lloyd Bachrach.  Despite Lloyd's congenital bone deficiency, he developed his physical skills at an early age with his passion for swimming, baseball, and bowling. By his teen years, Lloyd began to excel in the sport of gymnastics, competing against able body gymnasts. He won a staggering 25 gold, 27 silver, and 20 bronze medals in various competitions including the Prairie State Games, Chicago Park District Gymnastics on the Beach, the Midwest Open, and other intercollegiate meets.  Lloyd was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Paralympic Team and competed in sit volleyball in the 1996 Atlanta games.

Lloyd talked to our superstars about being "differently-abled."  A word he prefers to use rather than disabled.  Lloyd shared his experiences of perseverance.  He also left our students with 5 keys to success:

  1. Build high self-esteem
  2. Focus with a positive attitude
  3. Set goals
  4. Perseverance: don't give up, don't quit
  5. Take care of your health

In addition to being extremely fit and an extremely talented athlete, Lloyd is also an entrepreneur and author.  Lloyd is married and has two girls who attend Lane Tech High School.  You can read more about Lloyd by visiting

NO SCHOOL - 3/25

CPS has announced that Friday, March 25th will now be a non-attendance day for students.  Please mark your calendars as this is a revision on the CPS calendar.

New Cell Phone Policy

This week, Skinner implemented a new and stricter cell phone policy for 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  The policy was updated to further Skinner School's goal of keeping all Superstars safe under the CPS Student Code of Conduct and to minimize disruptions and distractions within the classroom and during lunch and recess.

The new policy was presented to upper grades students on Friday during a school assembly and a copy of the written policy was sent home to parents.  A copy of the updated policy can also be viewed here.

March Music Performance Days

It's Time for Music Performance Days!

In March, Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students will have a chance to perform during their music classes. This is a great opportunity for piano students to try out their songs on the grand piano, and for violin, guitar, trombone, voice or any other performers to try out what they have been working on in their private music lessons.
Ms. Maatouk will informally invite students up to the front of the class where they will say their name and what they will be performing, and then perform. Ms. Maatouk will take a picture of each student who performs and they will also get a Certificate of Bravery. Pictures from last year's Performance Days can be found under "Class Photos" on the Skinner Music Website.

Classroom Spotlight: Third Grade
Wax Museum

Last Friday, February 26, third grade students  presented their annual Wax Museum. Each student researched, wrote, and memorized a brief speech about an influential African American person. When the big day arrived, each student "became" a hero with costumes and props. Students froze in position awaiting their visitors. Parents, teachers, and students who visited the Wax Museum pressed a button on a frozen figure's shoulder and watched as the person came to life before their very eyes! Visitors listened as scientists, athletes, entertainers, politicians, and activists told their own life stories. Third graders were nervous, but excited to share what they learned in their research, and proud of how many visitors they had. Thank you to the Skinner community for supporting these students!

"We must never forget that black history is American history. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation's greatness." - Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-NY

- The Third Grade Team: Ms. Dalal, Ms. Ferrara, Ms. Fisher, and Mrs. Oluewu
