Science Fair

Congratulations to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Skinner Superstars on a fantastic Upper Grade Science Fair. Everyone did a phenomenal job! 

The following students will be representing Skinner West at the Regional Science Fair:

  • 6th grade: Mila M. and Emma R., with their experimental project Sweet Concentration. 
  • 7th grade: Andrew B. with his design project PSM: Personal Snow Melter .
  • 8th grade: I'deyah R. and Olamide B. with their experimental project Coloring Outside the Lines.
  • 8th grade: Luis S. with his experimental project titled Re-energizing the Body.

History Fair Achievements and Debater of the Year

Jada M. (6th grade) will be advancing on to the State History Fair Competition for her website: Housing Divided. She beat out hundreds of cps students and will be accepting a superior award for websites 

Olamide B., (7th grade) was honored as Debater of the Year, at the CPS Board meeting on May 27, 2015. Olamide was the only elementary school winner and was the first student to give her acceptance speech.  Olamide truly impressed the Board President and the members.  Congratulations Olamide!


Congrats to Xander B for Invention Convention Award!

     

     

    Congratulations to 6th grader Xander B. for participating in the 2015 Chicago Student Invention Convention. Xander's project Less Mess S'more Stick won the Grand Prize 1st Place. There were almost 200 projects from 21 schools. Xander's win is a great accomplishment and we are all so proud of him!

     

     


Congratulations to our Skinner Mathletes for winning 3rd place nationwide in the MathCon national math competition!

On Saturday, April 25, Skinner students participated in the MathCon national math competition at UIC.

There were 42 states, 330 schools, and 45,000 students that participated in this math competition resulting in 700 students being invited to compete in the final round.

Chess Team Takes 1st Place

Saturday, March 21st, Skinner Superstar Students, Leon C. (3rd grade), Rolando V. (3rd grade), Evan H. (2nd grade), and Jaylen J. (2nd grade) competed in a chess tournament at Chesterbrook Academy in Naperville. These chess masters took home first place in the team division  by half a point! This competition was part of the Chess Scholars After-School Program here at Skinner. We are very proud of our Superstars! 


Skinner Superstar "Mathlete" Competition

On Saturday, 2/21/015, Skinner "Mathletes" competed in the MathCounts - Chicago Chapter competition at the CNA building in downtown Chicago. Congratulations to Ethan B., Andrew B., Abhi G., and Faizi T., for proudly representing Skinner West as "Mathletes" in this competition.  

Skinner took 2nd Place as a team in their division and Abhi G. finished 1st in the division for the individual portion of the competition.  Abhi also finished in 2nd place overall in the Countdown portion of the competition.   

What is even more impressive is these "Mathletes" are 6th graders and this competition is for 6th through 8th grade students. The boys did a terrific job, please congratulate them when you see them!  Congratulations!!

Congratulations to the Skinner West Science Team! 

On Sunday, October 7th, Skinner West was one of 11 science experiments to participate in the launch of the Space X Dragon from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The winning micro-gravity science experiment and mission patches created by our Superstars are traveling to the International Space Station. click here to read the story.

Basketball Champions

We are so proud of all our basketball teams and the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the season: Boys 5/6, Girls 7/8, and Boys 7/8.   

Skinner 5/6 boys and 7/8 boys basketball are Fulton Network Champions!  We're proud that the teams also advanced to the 1st rounds of city playoffs.

Skinner West Awarded $5,000 Empowerment Grant!

Skinner West is proud to announce that it has been chosen as the recipient of a Motorola Mobility Empowerment Grant.  Empowerment Grants are given annually to help communities "close to the digital divide". This $5,000 grant will be used to purchase tablet computers for Mrs. Milroy's science lab.  Part of the application process was to create a YouTube video showing how Skinner West would use the technology to enhance the program.  The video was shot by parent Rich Ferguson and 5th grader Maya C and her amazing iPad.
